Bike Tour: Bike Boat Northern Tour - 8 days

Open water, flat rural land, picturesque harbor towns - „Northern Tour“ Explore the rich tradition in the flat “polder-land”, along the North seacoast and in romantic fishing villages. You will cycle across a distinctly rural, former lake and marsh land. Since the 17th Century, this area has been reclaimed from the sea, in ancient times by pumping it dry with windmills. Green polder-landscapes with quiet cycle tracks, the stretching North Sea beach and the beautiful sand dunes will alternate each other. For many guests one of the highlights on this tour is the extremely bike friendly island Texel. Beautiful flat landscapes, small dreamlike farm villages and picturesque harbor villages along the IJsselmeer, with an ancient history, will dominate the second part of the tour.

Route
Day 1: (Sat.) Arrival and embarkation in Amsterdam
Day 2: (Sun.) Amsterdam - Zaandam – „Zaanse Schans“ – Zaandam
Day 3: (Mon.) Zaandam- Alkmaar | Evening: Alkmaar-Den Helder
Day 4: (Tue.) North Sea island of Texel: round trip from/to Oudeschild
Day 5: (Wed.) Den Oever – Stavoren
Day 6: (Thu.) Stavoren - Medemblik – Hoorn – Enkhuizen
Day 7: (Fri.) Enkhuizen - Volendam – Waterland – Amsterdam
Day 8: (Sat.) Amsterdam: end of the tour

Day 1:    (Sat.) Arrival and embarkation in Amsterdam

Embarkation and check-in starts at 2 PM in Amsterdam (centre). Take the opportunity to go shopping or explore downtown Amsterdam, world famous for its canals, its quirky ‘leaning’ buildings, museums, the Anne Frank House, the Waterlooplein Flea Market, the Dam Square in the historical center and heart of the city. A canal tour is a unique way to see the capital of Holland from another side. Welcome meeting, drink, dinner and first briefing on board. First night on board in Amsterdam.

Day 2:    (Sun.) Amsterdam - Zaandam – „Zaanse Schans“ – Zaandam
32 km

You will cycle out of Amsterdam via a well maintained cycling track. Very soon you will leave the city and cycle through the green area of Waterland and the recreational area of Twiske to the open air museum ‘Zaanse Schans’ with its beautiful windmills, traditional wooden houses, an old Dutch village, a cheese farm and a traditional wooden clog maker. After exploring the museum continue just a few more miles to Zaandam. If you want to take a detour, opt for an additional cycling tour through Assendelft. The afternoon and evening are yours to explore and enjoy Zaandam. (ca. 32-45 km / 19-28 miles)

Day 3:    (Mon.) Zaandam- Alkmaar | Evening: Alkmaar-Den Helder
50 km

Your second day of cycling leads you pedaling through the beautiful flat and green polder landscape via small villages. This “Land of Leeghwater” is a scenic green area located between the cities of Amsterdam, Alkmaar and Hoorn. Leeghwater was a 17th Century scientist, who invented a revolutionary system to reclaim marshland from the sea by pumping out water with a system of windmills, smaller and larger canals. Today’s destination is the city of Alkmaar, where the ship will be waiting for you with a hot shower, a good glass of wine, a cool beer and a delicious meal. During dinner the ship will navigate the Noordhollands Kanaal to the naval port of Den Helder. (ca. 50 km / 31 miles)

Day 4:    (Tue.) North Sea island of Texel: round trip from/to Oudeschild
15 km

During breakfast the ship will cross the Marsdiep, a deep tide-race between Den Helder and Texel Island to the harbor of Oudeschild.
You will quickly understand why the island of Texel is a favorite destination for many tourists as you cycle around this enchanting Dutch island. Charming villages, beautiful beaches and areas of natural importance are crisscrossed by a network of cycling tracks, making all areas of the island easily accessible. Swim at one of the wide sandy beaches, visit the seal sanctuary “Ecomare” and/or cycle the beautiful “Thijsse-route” (with signposting, approx. 25 miles) through picturesque villages and landscapes. At the end of your cycling tour yua can enjoy a locally brewed beer during a visit to the small brewery in the harbor of Oudeschild. In the evening the ship will return to Den Oever on the mainland. The highlight of the evening will be a night of live music on board. (as desired 15-65 km / 9-41 miles)

Day 5:    (Wed.) Den Oever – Stavoren
43 km

The vessel will cross the large inland lake IJsselmeer to sail to Stavoren in the Province of Friesland. You can opt for a shorter or longer cycling tour: discover the nature area of Gaasterland or explore a part of the wide lake district, that Friesland is well-known for. You can also combine both options. Night in Stavoren, one of the famous 11 cities of Friesland. (ca. 43 or 55 km / 26-33 miles)

Day 6:    (Thu.) Stavoren - Medemblik – Hoorn – Enkhuizen
30 km

Sail to Medemblik during breakfast. Take the short pedaling from Medemblik along the IJsselmeer (former “Zuiderzee”) coast directly to Enkhuizen, where you can spend the afternoon. Enkhuizen is an old city with many centuries of maritime tradition. The “herring city” boasts a beautiful old harbor, an historical old town center and the very interesting “Zuiderzeemuseum“. If you prefer a longer cycling tour, ride from Medemblik to the former Dutch East India Company town of Hoorn, in the 17th century one of the world’s leading harbors and name giver of Cape Horn. Enjoy your lunch break and make a short stroll of the old city. Continue by bike through some picturesque rural villages to Enkhuizen. In the evening you enjoy a short city walking tour. (ca. 30-50 km / 19-31 miles)

Day 7:    (Fri.) Enkhuizen - Volendam – Waterland – Amsterdam
35 km

During breakfast the ship will sail to Volendam. Your final day of cycling will lead you through the beautiful area of ‘Waterland’ with its hundreds of small lakes and tiny canals, where you will have the opportunity to visit a cheese farm. Recommended (extra miles) is a detour to the former island of Marken, to continue through the water shaped region of Waterland back to the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer. If you didn’t go for a canal tour on the first day, you will have the opportunity to do so today. (ca. 35 - 50 km / 22 - 31 miles)

Day 8:    (Sat.) Amsterdam: end of the tour

After breakfast: disembarkation and end of the tour.

accommodation

DE HOLLAND

De Holland is a 257 ft. long and 24 ft. wide cozy river cruise ship. The vessel has 34 cabins for max. 68-72 passengers. All of the rooms are well-equipped outside cabins.

Lower deck cabins
The lower deck has 24 twin cabins. All cabins (approx. 108 sq.ft.) have an individual climate control system, digital TV, mini-safe, small wardrobe, hair dryer, 230V sockets, 2 single beds (78 x 31 inches) and a private bathroom with shower, toilet and bath products and a window (2.55 ft. x 1.28 ft.) that – for safety reasons – cannot be opened. Three “regular” twin cabins in the front have single beds, set in L-shape, and an additional Pullman Bed as optional third bed. Five twin cabins and 16 “superior” twin cabins have separate beds, set next to each other as a hotel style bed (78 x 62 inches). The difference between twin and superior twin cabins on the lower deck is their location in relation to engine room, stairs and salon and/or (in 3 cases) beds set in L-shape (optional triple cabin).

Upper deck cabins
The upper deck offers 9 identical superior twin cabins (accommodation: s. lower deck) and 1 suite. The suite (approx. 140 sq. ft.) has the same amenities as the superior twin cabins, but is larger and – in addition – also has a mini-bar and a sofa bed as optional third bed. All upper premium deck cabins and the suite have a “French Balcony” (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors) instead of a regular window.

Beds in most cabins are normally set as hotel-style beds (78 x 62 inches) or, optional, on previous request, can be arranged as 2 separate single beds (78 x 31 inches).

Restaurant and lounge
DE HOLLAND has a large salon with large panoramic windows on the upper deck that combines the restaurant, bar and a lounge area. Wi-Fi is available for guests in the salon (limited data packages included / additional data packages can be purchased online).

15-04-2017

...Everything worked really well. The booking process was simple. The E-mail support was good. The information provided was really useful. The trip was brilliant. The boat staff were excellent and the Guides were attentive and informative. The Netherlands themselves are beautiful...

31-08-2015

....Thank you for the wonderful holiday!. We really enjoyed every hour of it and I believe we are planning to come back. Thanks for your kind assistance and helpfulness in planning and fulfilling the plans!...

17-07-2015

....We had a wonderful experience, and the tour was beyond our expectations. We have nothing to complain. My only suggestion is, if possible, change the towels at least once. I really don't care to use just one towel during a week. The problem is that is almost impossible have it dry, especially for us, Brazilians, that use to take more than a bath a day. But it's not a big problem, and you can be sure, we'll be back soon....
