Today is the first of seven unforgettable days. You will journey to the cosy harbour town of Harlingen, in the northern province of Friesland.
Once you have left your luggage in your room, go for a stroll through this historic town. As you amble up and down the Wadden Promenade on the sea front, consider what a special place the shallow Wadden Sea is. It is even listed as Unesco World Heritage. At low tide the mudflats and tidal creeks are revealed and shore birds arrive to forage. During a walk through the centre of town you will discover a great number of monumental warehouses, buildings of architectural or historical interest and picturesque canals.
After your breakfast it's time to get on board the ferry to the isle of Vlieland.
(The boat leaves at 9:00 a.m. to give you a full day at Vlieland.)
With the wind in your hair, the sun in your face and water all around, you are entering a different world. The Wadden Sea is an intertidal area so at low tide vast mudflats emerge providing vital foraging grounds for waders and a resting place for sunbathing seals. In this conservation area biodiversity is very rich.
We know for a fact that everyone who sets eyes on Vlieland is hooked for life. It is the most pristine of the Wadden Islands, counting just one village. Only the locals are permitted to drive on this island dominated by lovely woods, yellow sand flats, windswept dunes and wide beaches. You could not wish for a better hiking and cycling destination!
Pull on your walking boots or hop back on your bike and get moving. Out of all the Wadden Islands, Vlieland is the furthest away from the mainland. Nowhere will you find as much peace and quiet as here.
Go to De Noordwester Information Centre for everything you want to know about the island and Wadden Sea. This is also where you book one of the numerous 1.5 hour excursions led by nature guides (it is advisable to contact the centre beforehand). In the village, the long, tree-lined high street offers shops, restaurants, cafes and contagiously happy holidaymakers.
Catch the ferry to the isle of Terschelling (leaving at 10:05 a.m.), the largest of the five Wadden Islands and home to 4700 islanders. In a string of villages stretching west to east you’ll find many opportunities to get know the island culture: visit one of seven museums or just look around at the lovely houses with characteristic facades, old churches and Brandaris Lighthouse. The largest village, convivial West-Terschelling, is abuzz with people visiting restaurants and cafes. In short, Terschelling is a super place where lovers of the great outdoors have the time of their lives.
Walking north-south you’ll come across seven habitats: the North Sea, a really wide beach, young dunes, gray older dunes, birch woods, open polder and finally, beyond the Wadden dike, the Dutch Shallows with mudflats teeming with life at low tide. Dune biotopes are especially exiting because of their ever-changing nature under the influence of wind and water: the landscape is transforming under our very noses. Trek over to see a wet dune valley or the salt marshes of Boschplaat nature reserve in the east. The island has many good quality bike tracks. Shoppers will enjoy the villages of West Terschelling and Midsland where you’ll find a pleasant array of boutiques and shops including some selling local produce such as sheep’s cheese, cranberry wine and sallowthorn jam. Can’t wait to relax and read your book on the beach? Terschelling is the place to be.
Today ends your special island experience. Catch the ferry from 5.30 p.m. back to mainland Friesland. In one of the many cafes in the lively center of Harlingen, you can relax with a drink and look back on a wonderfull holiday.
Today your cycling holiday comes to an end. But not before you have enjoyed another big hearty breakfast at your hotel. After breakfast, it’s time to go home.

...We thoroughly enjoyed our Island Hopping Tour! It was a great way to spend our 10th year of cycling tours! The Westcord hotels on Vlieland and Terschelling were excellent: friendly, helpful staff, excellent food (so good that we even took photos of some of the dishes), and comfortable rooms. The supplied route to Harlingen worked well and we got there in good time for the first ferry crossing....
....We had an excellent and highly enjoyable cycling holiday and would highly recommend Dutch Bike Tours to anyone thinking of a cycling holiday in Holland. All 3 hotels you booked were of excellent quality with good service. The evening meals ( we were booked half board) were also of an excellent standard and good value. The bikes we were hired took us a little while to get used to as they were the standard ‘Dutch bikes’ rather than the touring bikes we are accustomed to in England but it was not long before we were comfortable with them. The maps and directions were also good and very clear....
