Bike Tour: The Heathlands of Drenthe tour - 5 days

Follow numbered signs for easy cycling.
If you’re into silent, lonely places in the back of beyond, then look no further: This is the bike tour for you! Heather moorland, heath, peatland, woods and wetland play leading roles in this spectacle. Idyllic country villages, prehistoric megalithic burial chambers and quiet lakes are strong supporting roles. Story lines tell of prehistoric Drenthe, of peat digging and sheep herding, of WWII and of modern nature management. Rural Drenthe Province, in the north east of the Netherlands, has an enviable network of cycling paths and beautiful scenery to go with it. This tour is especially recommended for August – beginning of September when flowering heather plants light up the dry grassy sand plains and the heath turns a lovely mauve colour.

Day 1:    Arrival in Westerbork
We have booked you a room in a pleasant hotel in the charming village of Westerbork. Free parking at the hotel. No need to make a reservation. Do explore this snug little community.
Day 2:    Westerbork - Emmen
55 km
If youre into WWII history, Camp Westerbork Memorial Center will no doubt be your first stop. Built in 1939, it was originally intended as a refugee camp for Jews fleeing Nazi Germany. But from 1942 to 1944, Camp Westerbork was used by the Nazis as a transit camp to deport thousands of Jews (and others) to concentration camps elsewhere in Europe, trains leaving every Tuesday. Today, an impressive museum gives visitors realistic insight into the lives of victims and survivors. There is original film footage from 1944. On a lighter note, if you have an interest in astronomy, you might like to visit the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescopes, consisting of a linear array of 14 antennas arranged on a 2.7 km East-West line. To reach them, you walk through the woods down Milky Way path, displaying down-scale models of the planets of the solar system. Cycle through Middenveld/Grolloo and Odoorn nature reserves. Timber harvesting, nature management and recreation go hand in hand here. There is a recreational lake for swimming, a 14m high watch tower and a sandy play area for kids. They have even built a fabulous long boardwalk so cyclists can keep their feet dry in the wetland. The scenery consists of progressively mixed woods and heath dotted with small juniper trees. This region also has hundreds of shallow lakes. Look out for the impressive remainders of 5500 year-old stone burial chambers we call hunebedden. Great heavy boulders were dragged to these sites and piled up into rectangular passage graves. Fifty-two of these monuments from the New Stone Age can be seen in Drenthe Province. At the end of the day, you will reach the town of Emmen, a lively place with busy pavement cafés and restaurants. Our tip: take out an extra day to go to Emmen Zoo and Adventure Playground. Its one of the most popular attractions in the north of the Netherlands.
Day 3:    Emmen- Hoogeveen
50 km
Firstly, we must warn you that Ellert and Brammert may be on the prowl! Legend has it, these two giant highwaymen rob travellers on the public road! But look on the bright side: We have Gees nature reserve lined up for you today, characterized by woods, lakes, white and purple moor, and silence broken only by bird song! A hundred years ago, it was an area of overgrazed heathland with drifting sands. Around the 1930s trees were planted to make the sand stay put; and for the production of wood. Nowadays, this lush biotope is home to fox, badger, adder, Pine Marten, slow worm, sand lizard, Goldcrest, birds of prey and many more creatures. This stretch of the bike tour ends in the bustling town of Hoogeveen.
Day 4:    Hoogeveen - Westerbork
55 km
Pedalling on, heres another history lesson for you. In the peat moors youll now cross, many well-preserved Peat Bog People have surfaced: the bodies of people who lived around two thousand years ago. Cold acid water and a lack of oxygen combined to prevent their skin decaying. Seven of them are on display in a museum in the town of Assen (closed for restoration until Autumn 2011). The boggy moors open up to purple heath. Feast your eyes on beautiful Sleenerzand nature reserve. Woods, lakes, patches of heath, and traces of past cultures such as stone age crop fields ("celtic fields), dolmens, hunebedden and glacial hollows of up to 5m deep. Travel back in time to the museum village of Orvelte. Monumental farms with thatched roofs, demonstrations of old trades and crafts, narrow cobbled streets, all give you a sense of how Drenthe must have looked around the year 1900. At the end of the day, you will arrive back at your point of departure: Westerbork.
Day 5:    Return Home
Today, your bike holiday draws to a close, but not until you have indulged in a big hearty Dutch breakfast for the last time. After breakfast, it is time to go home.
