Dutch Water Line Route

Bike Tour: Dutch Water Line Route - 4 days

If you are interested in military heritage, this could be the cycling tour for you. It follows a former Defensive Line through tranquil countryside. Along the way, you will come across forts, trenches, fortified towns, sluices, rivers and areas of natural beauty. The lovely towns of Culemborg, Leerdam, Gorinchem and Vianen will be sure to enchant you. They exude a historical atmosphere. We also recommend a visit to Loevestein castle.
Day 1: Arrival in Bunnik
Day 2: Bunnik - Gorinchem
Day 3: Gorinchem - Bunnik
Day 4: Return Home

Day 1:    Arrival in Bunnik

Arrival in Utrecht

Day 2:    Bunnik - Gorinchem
58 km

Start cycling from the hart of Holland and travel south, you'll reach "Glass town Leerdam, a meeting place where glassblowers from many countries demonstrate their craft. Further on, you´ll come across two more Dutch Water Line fortresses: Asperen and Vuren. Before you'll reach Gorinchem you can cross the River Waal by ferry boat and you will reach infamous and interesting Loevesteijn Castle. The nearby fortified town of Woudrichem is also well worth a visit.

Day 3:    Gorinchem - Bunnik
55 km

Gorinchems walled town centre has a long, turbulent history and over two hundred monuments to remember it by. It used to be big in fishery, markets and trade, but was often plagued by floods and conquerors (the town was the gateway to Holland). Gorinchem is pronounced gorcum, by the way. Today you will cycle back up north to the big city of Utrecht. In the heart of the old inner city lies the peaceful Oude Gracht (= Old Canal). Its characteristic quaysides are unique to Utrecht. Nowadays they are the pleasant setting for waterside cafes. Dont miss the pretty Museum Quarter.

Day 4:    Return Home

After enjoying your hotel breakfast, it is time to go back home. Do you still have time to visit the city of Utrecht? From Bunnik station it is an eight-minute train trip to Utrecht Central Station. Utrecht is the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands. We recommend you visit the historical canal area, unique for its quays where you can sit sipping your drink in peace and quiet, away from the bustle of the street above.
