Bike Tour: Tulip Tour - 5 days

This wonderful trip to the Bulb Flower District comes recommended from April to mid-May. This is the period you’re most likely to strike lucky and see the tulip fields in full bloom, although nobody can predict exactly when spring will set in. Opening times for world-famous Keukenhof park vary slightly each year but fall roughly within this timespan. The historical cities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Haarlem are great places to spend an evening, at a pavement café perhaps, weather permitting. On the first cycling day, don’t miss Cruquius (1852), a steam-driven pumping station, built with attention to aesthetic detail, and an important part of our industrial heritage. It was one of three pumping stations devised to drain Haarlemmermeer lake (170km2) which had the nasty tendency to expand and eat up more and more land and villages.

Route
Day 1: Arrival Amsterdam
Day 2: Amsterdam - Haarlem
Day 3: Haarlem - Leiden
Day 4: Leiden - Amsterdam
Day 5: Return home

Day 1:    Arrival Amsterdam

Get here early and opt to wander around the gorgeous and surprisingly peaceful seventeenth century canal ring area (World Heritage Site).  If you like bustle, make your way to the city’s famous squares: Dam, Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. Should you prefer to roam off the beaten track, saunter up Brouwersgracht or hire a canal bike and find out what the city looks like from the water. Parking in Amsterdam is difficult.

Day 2:    Amsterdam - Haarlem
53 km

It may be tempting to linger in Amsterdam, but today is the day you get to see your first tulip fields! Set off early to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the lively capital and enter a region called South Kennemerland. Firstly, head for Cruquius, a steam-driven pumping station for a lesson in Dutch water management. Just after the village of Bennebroek you can catch your first short glimpse of the tulip fields. Then veer north and crown your day in the city centre of Haarlem. Look up at the typically Dutch facades on the market square. The city boasts a wealth of art, culture, monuments, restaurants and cafes.

Day 3:    Haarlem - Leiden
38 km

Downtown Haarlem deserves to be explored thoroughly. We recommend a city walk to discover the city’s hidden "hofjes”. A hofje is a square of tiny almshouses set around an idyllic courtyard, often built by the church or by private charity to house single older women. Also dating back to the Dutch Golden Age, the works of Haarlem painter Frans Hals (group portraiture) and his townsmen including Jacob Ruysdael (land- and seascapes) and Pieter Saenredam (church interiors) are on display at the Frans Hals museum. In the afternoon get set for a colourful bike trip through the Dune and Bulb Region. Try to time this holiday before mid-May to capture the bulb flower fields in their full splendour! Tulips, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths are grown here commercially (for bulb export) and temporarily transform the landscape into one of the country’s best-loved tourist attractions. Should you want to spend a day at world famous Keukenhof flower exhibition, we recommend you book an extra night in Leiden. Leiden is our oldest university town. It has a very busy cultural events calendar and a friendly city centre with canals, monuments windmills and museums. The historical botanical gardens get special mention.

Day 4:    Leiden - Amsterdam
58 km

Should you wish to see more tulips, we advise you book an extra night and do a round tour of the Bulb District. The route back to Amsterdam takes you past several lakes, across rural ‘Green Heart’, to the River Amstel. On the banks of this lovely river, you will encounter pretty villages and grand country houses. This is one of the greenest routes there is to get you right into Amsterdam back to your hotel. As you may have guessed, the city is named after the river. In the 13th century, Amsterdam started out as a fishing village by a dam at the mouth of the river. The oldest part of Amsterdam is around the Oude Kerk (Old Church). Known as Amsterdam’s living room, it’s the oldest building in the city.

Day 5:    Return home

After breakfast your cycling holiday has come to an end.

15-05-2016

...The Netherlands is a great country to bike through, especially for folks who do not like cycling on busy roads.  I regret not leaving one week earlier (ex.  end of April or first start of May) as we came at the very tale end of the tulips.  However, the weather was relatively good, everything was in bloom, the air was full of wonderful fragrants and bird calls, and everywhere you look, nature lovers are treated to some fine landscaping...

11-05-2016

...This was one of the easiest, most enjoyable vacations I have ever experienced and so much of that is thanks to you, Frank, and your staff. Thank you for working with us to extend the 4 day tulip tour route into an 8 day tulip tour route. It was a perfect amount of time. I cannot compliment your tour company enough...

25-04-2016

....Overall a very enjoyable holiday and something we would seriously consider doing again....

18-04-2016

....First of all, I would like to say the trip was great, everything we anticipated and even more- Thank you very much....

12-04-2016

...It was an excellent tour & we thoroughly enjoyed it. Could have a better hotel at Leiden though. Rest fantastic. Thank you...

23-06-2015

...My general impression was it was a good holiday, I enjoyed it.  I think going on it when the Keukenhof Gardens is open is a  real plus, I did not know about the Keukenhof Gardens. Lots of information that you give at the start, brouchure, the map, the small cards with  network route numbers and also detailed instructions. Really helpful. The hotel were nice and good standard.  The ones in Amsterdam and Haarlem probably edged in over Leiden, however it is stated that hotels are 3-4 star....

14-05-2015

...Thank you for choosing such lovely routes through Holland, we heard Nightingales and Cuckoos on parts of our journey (rare in the UK) and saw many other birds and lovely wild plants. The bikes were good too! We were not sure whether the bikes would have panniers and separate cable locks, so we brought our own - so it would be good if you mentioned on the website that people did not need to bring cable locks and that you provided large panniers on the bikes!...

10-05-2015

...Cycling holiday is a very good idea and the Dutch countryside is really beautiful...

06-05-2015

...We enjoyed our tour very much indeed. The tulips and Kerkenhof were amazing. The bikes were great (my wife now wants a Dutch Bike!) and caused us no problems at all. The hotels were great especially the Art Hotel in Amsterdam. The Best Western in Leiden was nice but not really geared up to do evening meals otherwise the hotels and food was excellent....

19-04-2015

...We had a wonderful time on our cycle tour, a great way to see the country and something we would definitely do again. The service in terms of the bikes, the bags being moved etc all worked really well. The first two hotels were excellent, if I was to criticise anything I would say that the Best Western in Leiden was not as nice as the other two hotels we stayed at. It was in a good location but we felt the room was not as nice and the breakfast was not as good. We have never been on a holiday like this before and it was our first time to the Netherlands so we weren't sure how we would get on with finding our way but the numbered junctions is a great system and really easy to follow...

16-04-2015

...We did have a good time thank you and all aspects worked very well in terms of information transfers, hotel bookings, luggage transfers etc...

13-04-2015

...The four bikes we rented worked well. The bikes were waiting at the Westward Hotel when we arrived on Tuesday morning. The hotel was able to help us find the bikes and gave us a pack of information. We dropped of our luggage by 9 a.m. every morning.  Our luggage was waiting for us when we arrived a each of our hotels. We like the fact that we were not biking along large roads. During our extra day in Leiden, we went to Noordwijk and were able to bike through beautiful sand dunes. We were pleased with the routes...

09-04-2015

...Our tour has finished! It was great! The organization also was great and sorry for the delay of our luggage today in gouda. I will recommend you to my friends! Thank you for all!...

09-04-2015

....First I would like to thank you, and your staff for your services, it has been a great vacation, and a great bike experience...the routes were fantastic and we enjoyed it 100%, everything worked perfectly with luggage and the hotels were great and very well located, the pictures are already in the facebook, I liked the dutch bike tours italia in the FB... we will recommend your services to our friends in Brazil for sure...

25-05-2014

...The tours in Holland was very good, well organized and we enjoyed the days around Holland...

03-05-2014

...The bikes and hotels were all great and I'm sure we will be back one day. One thing I think you could improve on are the maps from Casa 400 hotel to get to the first numbered cycle route. The photocopy maps were very difficult to follow and the road names too small to read. Hope you don't take this as a criticism as we really had a fab time. Many thanks for all the organising...

01-05-2014

....Thank you for your e mail and we are very grateful for the cycling holiday you prepared for us in Holland, which was one of the best holidays my wife and I have had!
We had never been on a biking holiday before, and we appreciated the fresh air, the easy cycling and we found your bikes of the highest quality (much better than our own bikes at home! We wondered whether we could get similar ones for ourselves here in the UK?).
The routes you choose were really nice, and we appreciated being able to spend the extra night in each hotel so we could explore the cities of Amsterdam, Harlem and Leiden, going to various museums, art galleries, churches and concerts etc, not forgetting the wonderful Keukenhof.Again we would like to thank you for your prompt and efficient dealing with all our enquiries and arranging such a lovely holiday for us. We showed some pictures of our travels to the ladies in our church this afternoon and they were very impressed!....
